One name – three winners 15 March 2006
Three lucky CJ Pask Winery Great Long Lunch guests received a hamper from Te Mata Cheese Company for helping name its new cheese.
The pyramid-shaped, vine ash-rubbed fresh goat cheese, launched at this year’s Great Long Lunch, will be called Black Reef.
In early March lunch guests were given the opportunity to name the new cheese.
Of the hundreds of entries received, three guests suggested the cheese be called Black Reef because of its ash-rubbed surface and the reef’s proximity to Marine Parade in Napier, where the annual lunch is held.
Black Reef is a well known landmark in Hawke’s Bay, near Cape Kidnappers. It is a popular fishing spot and the exposed, charcoal-coloured rocks at the inshore end of the reef are home to thousands of nesting gannets.
Te Mata Cheese Company’s managing director Karryn Bish was delighted with the response from lunch guests.
“They loved the cheese, they loved the way Dish Catering had combined it with other delicious local flavours, and they loved the fact that they had the chance to decide what to call it,” she said.
“Naming a new cheese is a unique opportunity, and it’s wonderful that so many people were involved in the process. All our cheeses are named for iconic Hawke’s Bay places or landmarks, so Black Reef was perfect.”
Mrs Bish congratulated everyone who entered the competition, and said many of the suggested names have already been used by Te Mata Cheese for its existing products including a Brie-style cheese called Pania, Kaweka Aged Gouda and Bay View Blue. For further information or photos please contact:
